Feeling Older?

Does having your cherished family ornaments referred to as "retro" make you feel a little older, Thirtysomething? It makes me happy that they were a hit and brought back some good memories to those who saw them.

The star on your animal tree sat on top of Christmas trees in our home from about 1970 (maybe a year earlier) on. I still remember buying it at the old McConnell's 5&10 on Oak Street in McRae, Georgia. Wow! Now that dates me!

If your visitors thought those were retro, they need to take a look at those in my attic. Some of them go back at least to the 50s . Many are still pretty but are so dated you never see them anymore. Time changes things but doesn't always improve them.

Getting into the retro holiday spirit

Well, we had our neighborhood Tour of Homes this afternoon. For some crazy reason, I volunteered our house to be in it since we were going to be in town after all. It was actually a lot of fun, and we had a good turnout. What was funny, though, was that I apparently had a retro-decorating theme and didn't realize it!

I lost count at five people who said they hadn't seen icicles in forever (I actually decorate with them every year). That combined with the other old -I mean retro-stuff caused much gushing and reminiscing about the good old days. I'm happy to have brought back so many memories for people, but it was pretty funny that it was unintentional.

Patridge (Family) in a pear tree, anyone?

Getting There

Today has been a good day for getting "stuff" out of the way. The buyer picked up the furniture and paid me in full which was very nice. The lady who was interested in my bedroom suite and said she would call me about it, did call and is going to bring the money for it tomorrow. Very, very nice.

She got a real deal on a solid cherry Drexel Heritage set but in this economic climate, I was just happy to unload, er, sell it. What I don't think she realizes is just how difficult it's going to be to move, especially the amoire. I've warned her but am not sure it is sinking in all the way. It took two very strong professional movers to get it into the house and they had to struggle to do so. Every piece of it is extremely heavy but that will be her problem now.

On the low side, I've been fighting a sinus infection/allergy all week. I can't seem to get warm enough, then all of a sudden, I'm burning up. Lord, please let me make it through next weekend even if you throw me to the wolves then!

Sales Are Slow

Sales have really slowed the past couple of days and those who call want stuff I've already sold. Go figure!

The worst part is I keep finding stuff and adding to it. I decided I had used the Paul Revere flatware so long that the British had actually arrived and it was time to get rid of it too. Lots of pieces collected over the years but just no money here. The local thrift shop should be pretty happy next Friday afternoon.

It's really sad to see so much need here. I almost feel guilty about being so happy to leave. Almost.

Should Have Known Better

I absolutely know better than to send photos to the paper when I'm dead tired and sleepy but I did it anyway.

A brain lapse or something like it led me to decide to submit the library pictures taken at Authors' Night Out to the paper last night so I wouldn't have that facing me today. Turned out to be a really bad decision, albeit a funny one, and one that might cause others questions my character to say the least, and likely my sanity too.

The first five were a snap. Smooth sailing, no problems. It was the last three that got me in hot water. (I might have even blushed if I still bushed.)

I wrote the cutlines, attached them to an email, and hit send just as I did the first ones. That part went just fine. What wasn't fine was I also attached a racy photo that a friend had asked me to share earlier. It was not of me (or anyone else). It isn't pornographic, just a photo of a somewhat graphic instructional poster, but you can imagine how I felt when I discovered this morning that I had sent it to the editor along with the other photographs. Luckily, he was thought it was funny and was still laughing when I walked in the office this morning. Fortunately, he has a better sense of humor than I thought he had. Of course, he had shared it with the others there too!

Thank God I didn't have the library director's new email or it would have gone to him too as I promised I would share photos with him. Knowing me, I would have copied him on it to keep from doing the same job twice. Today, I was doubly glad for small blessings.

A Little Time Off

I broke down and agreed to stay a while at the library tonight during their Christmas Night Out Authors Program (only because my friend asked so sweetly). I have to admit it was nice to take a break but when I sat down and got still, I couldn't stop yawning. Guess I really needed a little time off!

It was very nice though. Too bad so many people don't read anymore. Some of the people I've met recently seem not to have ever read a book. (Not sure they would recognize one if it bit them.)

It's back to work now. I am beginning to see a little daylight at last. Now if something else doesn't pop out of the woodwork to bite me!

Making Progress

It's been a hectic few days but (slightly) profitable ones. Almost all the furniture has been sold, all the silver except for 3-4 pieces of silver plate, and several other things. Tonight, I donated the contents of the linen closet to the library to use for programs etc.

Lest you think that doesn't amount to much, you never saw the linen closet here. I've already given several sets away and tossed those too stained to be of any use and I still managed to give them 118 napkins, six table toppers, ten large tablecloths, and ten small tablecloths!

Before you leap to conclusions about my sanity, I did not accumulate these things. I inherited them, many of which date back to the 40s and 50s. Good riddance!

I find myself a being a little slack about posting but there's so much to do here, plus, I lost most of the day today taking take my car in for past due service and keeping a doctor's appointment so that put yet another hitch in my progress. To top that off (and you may question my sanity about this), I volunteered to make some candy and dip some Amaretto cherries for Christmas night out Thursday. I don't know what came over me but it's a shame I wasn't stricken with laryngitis when I opened my mouth!
