Fish Number #3, R.I.P.?

Well, the title is a bit misleading. Fish #3 is still alive and kicking (or swimming) at the moment. However, she has probably lost a few days at least off her life after Little Bit decided to feed her. She found the almost full container of fish flakes and dumped the entire thing in the aquarium. Of course, her timing was perfect: Daddy was trying to eat a late supper and I was finishing cleaning up after the girls' baths. Needless to say, it created quite a bit of extra work for all involved. It created even more when she decided to try and "help" by pouring Brayda from the Corningware container that was her temporary home back into the almost-full aquarium we had just finished cleaning and refilling. She dumped almost all the water onto the floor, along with a very confused goldfish.

All's well that ends well, hopefully. Both little angels (?) are in bed, exhausted after a trip to see their Grandmother back from England and an afternoon of rambunctious neighborhood friends over.

First Day of Trip

I promised I would post something about my trip. I haven't started the articles for the paper yet but I will bore our readers with excerpts from my journal for the next several days. I will start with Day #1 this time and hope everyone is still awake by the end of three weeks of trivia!

Day 1: Son #2 arrived early which was fortunate as he helped me repack because my luggage was overweight. Despite having to take time to raid Son #1's apartment for a different carry-on bag, we left for Hartsfield with plenty of time to spare which turned out for the best. Even though an accident slowed us, I still had lots of time. That is, I did until one of Delta's finest directed me to the wrong gate. By the time I walked the five miles to the correct one, the plane was boarding.

What was supposed to be a partially filled flight turned into a packed one with passengers from an aborted flight to Munich trying to make a connecting flight at Heathrow. Even so, the plane was loaded and ready to leave at the scheduled time of 10:50 p.m. but then we had to wait about 15 minutes for their luggage to get there. (Wonder if it made it to England with them?)

The flight was smooth, attendants were nice, but it would have been much more enjoyable if I hadn't wound up with a gabby seatmate who talked. And talked. Non-stop all night long! All I can say is that seven plus hours of constant chatter gave me TMI, much more than I ever wanted to know about a complete stranger. Thank heavens I've forgotten his name even though some of the grungier facts are still stuck in my brain!

All that made me much tireder than I probably should have been but R was waiting for me and we had a nice drive back to Chelmsford (Essex). We stopped at a beautiful old hotel dining room about halfway back for tea and sandwiches. At least he had tea. I opted for Diet Coke but the sandwich and service were quite good. NOTE: You will see a running theme of food in future missives. Son #1 complained about the food when he was there but apparently he didn't eat where I did. It was good at the worst and wonderful at the best which was most of the time.

Still Winding Down

I can't believe I've been back more than 48 hours and have barely slept at all. I was up 21 hours and thought for sure I'd be out for a while (the way I did when I got there) but nothing yet. I have a feeling I'm in for a big crash! For now, I'm still upacking and playing catch up but promise to start posting notes from my journal really soon.

Back in the USA

I reluctantly left the UK yesterday afternoon (their time). The plane was delayed over an hour for takeoff and the flight was long but I finally got here and out of the airport about 8:30 p.m. (Atlanta time). Son #1 hadn't had dinner so we stopped at the Flying Biscuit before continuing on to my apartment. They all seemed happy to see me and wanted to hear all about my trip. One server called me "Dame ***" and the others groaned, saying now I'd expect all of them to call me that. Told them that "Her Majesty" will do just fine.

I'd been up for 21 hours before I finally got to bed about midnight. I slept a long time after I got there and thought the same would happen here but I woke up shortly after 5 a.m. and haven't been able to go back to sleep.

Lots of catching up to do but I promise to post more about my "adventures" as soon as I get some little things like paying bills, grocery shopping, etc. out of the way. BTW, the weather there was especially good for this time of the year there I was told. Only rained two days out of 21 but now it seems I've come back to a monsoon!

Back Home Again

Well, Mom is due back tomorrow from England. Can't wait to hear all about her travels! I wonder now if the travel bug is going to really bite and she'll start traversing the globe. Should be interesting to see...

Musings etc.

Well, I talked to Mom today, finally! I've had the misfortune of just missing several of her phone calls. She's still doing well and returning this Thursday. I've really missed just picking up the phone and chatting with her and, at least the last few months anyway, being able to make plans to see her for the day. It's definitely been strange and I'll be happy when she's back.

I'm taking the GACE this Saturday, the Media Specialist portion. I'm a little nervous, I haven't taken any standardized test in so long. What if my brain completely freezes up? I'll be glad when it's over.

I'm listening to The Rainbow Connection on Pandora Radio while I type (LOVE it), and the song is Sarah Maclahlan's version of The Rainbow Connection (remember the Muppet Movie?). It's really neat, the first time I've heard it. I think I want it played at my funeral, I love that song so much. I suppose it's morbid, but I really do think sometimes about how I want my memorial service to be and what I want played and everything. Mom says she doesn't want her obituary in the paper, any fancy service, or anything like that. That's definitely where she and I differ. I told my husband I want a long and elaborate obituary, with lots of flowery phrases such as "my beloved wife" and "heaven loaned us an angel" and all the good stuff. Oh, and with a very flattering picture. Even if I'm 100 and he really has to dig back for one. I even read the obituaries now, not all of them, just the ones that really stand out to me, and give him examples. I'm like, "Now THIS is what I want." I tell him he should take notes and keep a file or something, but he doesn't listen. Apparently, he feels I'm worrying him so much about it that he'll definitely go before me and won't have to write mine!

Anyhow, how did I digress into that??

Puttin' on the Green, and other misadventures this week

Okay, I know I've been remiss in posting this week, but I promise I have a good excuse. Actually, several.

The first is that Little Bit caught the bug Roo had, and got nasty sick St. Patrick's Day. She had been rather ornery that day, but I thought she was probably just tired or whatever, since I didn't see any other symptoms. The thing is, I've really been talking up the holiday and tried to make it fun for the girls this week, since this is their daddy's first week back at work after four months of unemployment, and I knew he'd be putting in some major hours (I underestimated, but more on that later). Well, we did all sorts of crafts and fun stuff, and I made the food thematic, too. In hindsight, giving the "wee lasses" some "leprechaun fizzies" (lime sherbert and generic Sprite concoction) was not the best idea in the world. Little Bit threw up every bit of it. All over the kitchen. And the walls. Lime, no indeed, NEON green colored. Frankly, I didn't know where to start. She landed some in my supper as well, so that wasn't an option. Poor angel, she got sick one more time in the middle of the night, but that was it. Therefore, Wednesday morning at 4:30 when I started getting sick, I thought it would pass relatively quickly, seeing as it was not too long lasting for them. Boy, was I wrong! I was sick as a buzzard, as we are fond of saying in the South. Thank God my mother-in-law took care of the girls all day for me, because I couldn't keep anything in until about 4:00 that afternoon...not to exaggerate, but I truly thought I was going to have to be taken into the ER for some fluids or something. Anyhow, much better now, but I missed dropping off all the consignment things to our preschool that I've been working so hard to detail and tag the past several days. Oh, well.

DH is doing well at his job, the little I have seen him this week. On the bright side, he doubled what was supposed to be his weekly wage since he's been averaging at least 12 hours a day. On the down side, his girls miss him terribly. I'll be happy when it slows down some and we have a nice medium there. I've got my apps in at the local preschools, including the one Roo is at now, and am praying that the right position comes available and works out for us.

Mom is apparently having a grand, though exhausting time in England. She has one week there, and seeing as I've managed to miss two of her calls, I'm really anxious to hear all about her travels. I must admit to a bit of envy! I've always wanted to go to England. As a matter of fact, after I close this, I am going to relax in the tub with my latest Agatha Raisin novel.

R.I.P., Florida and Fayda

Well, two of our three goldfish kicked the bucket within 24 hours of each other. Only the third, Breda, survives.

I have to say, they have lived much longer than most goldfish I've seen...over a year. The girls were sad, but I think it was a good lesson in death. Two of our dogs have died in the last year and a half, but that was different. With the fish, I let Roo hold the bodies and we buried them ourselves, drawing a picture and decorating with rocks, then saying a little prayer.

When the second fish was doing poorly this morning, I turned off the aquarium light and told the girls he didn't feel well and we needed to give him some peace. Since Roo had a dental checkup this morning, I got preoccupied with getting her ready, only to find Little Bit dumping Lucky Charms (purchased for St. Patrick's Day tomorrow) into the tank to "make da fish feew better!" I never knew those little marshamallows dissolved so quickly.....

Funny moment: when the girls' other grandmother was on the phone with Roo, she said that the fish were in heaven now. Roo said, "No, Me-me, they're not in heaven yet! They're in a Ziplock bag in the refrigerator!"

Priceless moments

Some recent (as in the last day) priceless moments around my house:

Seeing your two year old covered in Vaseline. Then watching your husband try to catch your two year old, but having her keep slipping from his grasp, somewhat reminiscent of one of those old-fashioned greased pig contests.

When you tell aforementioned two year old "No hitting!" when she smacks her older sister on the back. She then informs you "But I like hitting!"

When your husband mentions riding on a friend's "hog" (Harley), your five-year-old says,"I wouldn't want to ride a hog. I'd rather ride a guinea pig."

And lastly...seeing your two-year-old tucking her very cheap plastic tiger figurine in a baby cradle, lovingly arranging blankets and a pillow around his head, and having the other animals gather around for a rousing rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "I See the Moon."

Welcome home, honey!

Well, DH got quite the reception after being gone all week to Louisiana. Roo woke up yesterday morning exceedingly grumpy, which is very unusual. She normally wakes up in a great mood, even if she didn't get much sleep (heaven knows where she got that from, since neither her Daddy nor I are exactly rays of sunshine in the a.m....she even told her teacher at Thanksgiving that "My mommy is VERY thankful for her morning coffee!"). Anyway, last night when it was close to bedtime, she announced her tummy hurt. I gave her some Mylanta but thought some of it was probably b/c she was so tired. Well, she kept getting up and finally started crying and asked if she could sleep with us. I told her yes, and she snuggled in between. After several tummy rubs, she and I both fell asleep. After a few minutes, I heard her moaning "Mom.....mom" in her sleep. I patted her on the back, thinking she was dreaming. Then it hit. She threw up every bit of food she ate yesterday, and a nice portion of it landed on her Daddy's back. Daddy, who was sleeping so hard he was snoring, practically levitated off the bed...I've never seen him get out of bed that fast! Then she ended up sticking her foot in it, and, well, I'll spare you the rest of the details. Suffice it to say, we were doing laundry in the middle of the night, and I have been going at it and disinfecting everything a good portion of today. Fortunately, she has not had any more episodes and seems to feel much better today, except some dry coughing. Well, DH can't say it isn't interesting around here!

Whew!

Well, the doctor's appt. went well! Everything looks good, Roo has grown 2 1/2 inches since last year and is in the 90%+ percentile for height, which I don't think she's ever dropped from (DH and I grow 'em tall...quite a feat considering I'm only 5"3!). The girls definitely take after Daddy on the height.

Four vaccinations plus a finger stick made for a pretty unhappy girl, but she actually did really well. Thankfully, she behaves a lot better than I did for my shots, which is REALLY fortunate considering how many they are required to have nowadays. Remember crawling through the car and having to pry my little hands from the interior when it was time for me to go inside the doctor's office, Mom? Betcha don't miss those days! I'm just so glad to be done.

DH is going to make a quick trip to Lafayette this week to see his grandparents. Probably a good idea since he won't be getting much vacation time for awhile, and his grandfather's dementia is getting worse. The past few days, he thinks his wife of 50 plus years is his hired help, or his mother. Really, really sad and tough for his whole family right now.

Speaking of sad, hubby attended a funeral today. A former co-worker's wife died of cancer this past Friday. She was only 43 and left behind two young children. Even though she was a nonsmoker, she developed stage 4 lung cancer. The doctors wasted precious time misdiagnosing her with a sinus infection, upper respiratory infection, etc. for three months before she was finally correctly diagnosed. Who knows if it would have prolonged her time any, but you have to wonder what if. Anyway, it was really one of those mornings where you hug your children and think of how grateful you are to be alive. It's so sad to think of what she's going to miss. I think I'm going to quit talking about it, because it's making me tear up as I type.

On a happier note, Mom made contact with my brother yesterday and she is having a great time in merry old England. I'm hoping to speak with her soon and get the "inside scoop."

Kids do the funniest things

I had to laugh this morning. Our "termite guy" came for the annual inspection, and Little Bit was a character. She opened the door, then said "Welcome to our home!" and introduced all of us, including the dog. Quite out of character for my usually reticent (at least with strangers) one. She must have taken quite a liking to him, because she followed him around everywhere. Unpredictable, that is for sure.

Roo is having her five year checkup, complete with vaccination, today. NOT looking forward to this, but will be glad to finally have it done. Even though she's never had a reaction, it's nerve-wracking to give them so much medication at one time. Wish us luck!

Cheerio, Life!

Well, Mom has made it to England safely. We received a phone message yesterday that her flight was good and she sounded tired but happy. DH took her to the airport and reports that she repacked twice while he was there and was extremely excited (as if the posts didn't show this!).

On our front, things are going better...in a way. DH received a job offer today, which he accepted. The upside is that it's employment, and does pay better than unemployment benefits. Also, the people there are really nice and I think it'll be a much more positive work environment than he had at his previous employment. The downside is that it doesn't beat the benefits' pay by much, and he's way overqualified for it. He has taken a $50,000 pay cut from two years ago, which really hurts. We're really lucky in a lot of ways, however, so I shouldn't complain, so I won't anymore. I'm just grateful that someone's willing to give him a chance. Now I've got to find something as well, to supplement it.

Less Than Five Hours

I'm all packed and ready to go. Just waiting for time to leave for the airport. Hopefully I will have some things to share after I get back. I know it will "Hot"lanta here for sure by then! As a matter of fact, I have the a/c going now but it's supposed to be in the mid 40s when I get there tomorrow and for the next 10 days. If it's that way the whole visit, I'll probably be ready for some warm weather by the 26th!

Counting Down

I'm in a countdown mode right now. I don't seem to be able to get down to business unless I have a deadline. I'm just going along leisurely and whoops! It's almost here! Definitely will finish packing everything I can tonight so I won't be so rushed tomorrow.

And by the way, whatever happened to "Hotlanta?" Twenty degrees isn't hot in anyone's book!

It's Official

It’s official. I'm a born again Klutz. I know I must be in my second childhood because when I was a kid all those years ago, I was always in such a hurry (a little hyper too) that I was forever hurting myself. Unfortunately, I’ve reverted to type.

Time to leave on a great trip and now I have a damaged finger. I promised not to break my foot (again) but I didn’t say anything about my finger.

I won’t go into details but it involved a water hose spraying water all over the sidewalk, a port-a-john, and a pickup truck. No, I didn’t fall, but did manage to hit my finger pretty hard and now I have a bone felon on it. Yuk! Great time for it to be all red and swollen and extremely painful.

Antibiotics and warm water soaks for 10 days so there’s no keeping it a secret. Probably couldn’t even if I tried but wild horses couldn’t drag me off that plane!

Weather, Etc.

Strange weather today. Snowed for almost 6 hours but only stuck for a very short time here in Midtown. It was beautiful out for a while but just looks dark and slushy now.

Thirtysomething says it's a different story there (40 miles east). They got about 5 inches of snow and their Internet and telephone aren't working. Or weren't about half an hour ago. Lights are flickering too, but hopefully won't go out totally. It could get pretty darned cold without power to run their heating system.

I'm really grateful all this stuff is supposed to move out before my flight leaves Wednesday evening. Son number one had his flight to California cancelled today so I'm doubly glad I decided to leave mid-week.

On another note, when I went to McRae last Thursday, one of the first people I ran into was one of the city councilpersons I referred to (no names called though) in the great water fiasco editorial. He turned his back as though I was going to force him to speak to me. How mature! Bit dog and all that.

I'm still trying to decide exactly what to take with me. I guess I'll be packing and re-packing until Wednesday afternoon. Just hoping I don't leave anything vital behind. With the difference in the pound and dollar, I don't plan to do a lot of shopping!
